29 Jan What is optical dispensing?
In a pub last year, I got chatting to a young woman who asked what I did, “optical dispenser” was my proud reply. What’s that? she asked; “It sounds like a condom dispenser”.
This response does beg the question though; does optical dispensing have an identity crisis? What is optical dispensing? To those in the ophthalmic industry, we know full well what it is. But to the average consumer, the very person to whom we owe a profound obligation to provide the very best and latest initiatives, products and advice for their eye health and optical appliances, they don’t have a clue.
We as ophthalmic professionals have an obligation to our customers and our prospective customers, to provide the very best and latest initiatives, products and advice for their eye health and optical appliances.
In the words of Zig Ziglar; “If you believe your product or service can fulfill a true need, it’s your moral obligation to sell it”.
To do less would be a travesty.
My slant is that optical dispensing is the ‘careful consideration of the successful marriage of required lenses with the desired frame to provide a lifestyle solution to our customers’. Very different from the optical salesperson; “That frame looks really nice on you”.
True optical dispensing is the bringing together of lenses and frames in a seamless way that delights the end user.
Quality dispensing doesn’t necessarily mean the Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing, although it sure helps. The Cert IV isn’t for everyone and quality training through short workshops and in-house training is available from Spectrum Optical.
But to deliver Best practice eyecare, all practice staff must be confident and knowledgeable to be able to impart important information to patients in a professional manner.
